Get Stuffed

Mick Jackson is currently the Booth Museum writer in residence and runs creative writing classes for a range of groups and ages using artifacts from the stores as inspiration.

Mick Jackson has written five books for Faber and Faber.  His first, The Underground Man, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.  He has also written and directed for TV.  His short story, The Pearce Sisters was adapted into a short film by Aardman Animation and won a BAFTA.  Between 2011-12 he was the writer-in-residence at the Science Museum.  He is the current writer-in-residence at the Booth Museum. Mick will talk about the Victorians’ love of taxidermy and tell us about our local Cabinet of Curiosity – the Booth Museum and its eccentric founder and Victorian collector.

Jazmine Miles-Long has been practising taxidermy since 2007. She creates work for artists, collectors and museums. Her love of natural history has led her to make work that respects the animal and highlights its beauty. Jazmine offers an understanding of the animal and the taxidermy process itself, promoting the scientific and cultural benefits of the craft. She calls herself an ‘ethical’ taxidermist.  This is her way of describing how she produces work and the fact that she only works with animals that have died from natural causes. Her specimens are donated to her by friends, family, rescue centres, and those who have found her through social networking sites.

On the night in her talk Jazmine will take us through the taxidermy processes of both birds and mammals.  Questions welcome.
